Kaprun, town in the area of Salzburg, Austria, is very close to the famous resort of Zell am See. The two centers are able to put together sleepping accommodation for more than 2 million tourists annually making it one of the most important tourist areas around the country. Also because of the glacier KaprunKitzsteinhorn, to over 3000 meters of altitude, you can ski all year round.
Kaprun is a popular ski resort in Austria because it is loved by the more experienced racers: the slopes in fact depart from the glacier and reach the country and, lower, Zell am See. The ski resort of Kaprun offers over a hundred miles of trails for downhill skiing and about twenty for cross-country, even at high altitude. Kaprun is known for being the first Austrian ski resort located on a glacier, making available to skiers, besides the tracks, also nearly 15 miles of winter hiking trails.
Here, authorized and controlled off-piste skiing tracks are one of the main attractions. The area is called Europa Sportregion, an area between the mountains of Schmittenhöhe and Kitzsteinhorn, and offers possibilities for winter sports from early October until late May, from skiing to snowboarding, from downhill to carving, from tobogganing to snow rafting, as well as trips and races on horse-drawn sleighs.

Kaprun is also a summer resort with large dams that become places for relaxation and sunbathing, and for the more daring, for a swim in the Alps. The dams are the pride of Austria for the period of postwar reconstruction: engineers from all over the world came out here to design a system of terraced dams that feed the large turbines of the largest hydroelectric power station in the country, visited by tourists. To get to the dams, called Limsbergsperre, Moosersperre and Drossensperre, there are a minibus and a funicular. Even in summer several ski lifts reach the peaks surrounding the town and the homonymous valley: the chairlift Langweidbahn and a funicular that starts from Alpincenter at 2,500 meters, lead to Kitzsteinhorn, where there is Panoramatunnel, with a unique view over the National Park Hohe Tauern. The offer of hotels in Kaprun is large, but certainly early booking is highly recommended.
