
Zell am See, Austrian town near Salzburg, is a medieval city at 700 meters above sea level near Mount Schmittenhöhe. The country is on the banks of a lake, the Zeller See, which in summer is crossed by the windsurfers and tourists. The same people who run during the winter in the more than 200 km of slopes, from November to May.
Zell am See is an ancient Roman fortress. In 740 AD, monks from Salzburg built a monastery and 500 years later the country was an important commercial center. Since the second half of 1800, Zell am See has become a tourist center and now, along with the nearby village of Kaprun, it is one of the best known and most popular ski resorts in Austria.
The village itself is very elegant, with shops, restaurants, and excellent hotels: the centre is a pedestrian area (Fußgängerzone) with some interesting attractions, such as the parish church with late-Gothic organs, the old Vogtturm tower near the Heimatmuseum museum, dedicated to the history of the city. In the small town of Kaprun, only seven km away from Zell am See, there is a famous spa and an important hydroelectric plant.

The ski slopes run directly from the town and the banks of the lake to reach up to 3000 meters and are part Europa Sport Region consortium. Around Zell am See and Kaprun are developing a series of well equipped ski areas: Kitzsteinhorn at an altitude of 3,200 m, the Schmittenhöhe to 2,000 meters, and Maiskogel to 1,700 meters. One of the main attractions is the Kitzsteinhorn glacier, where you can ski enjoying breathtaking views. From Zell am See you can reach directly the consortium of Schmittenhöhe with several lifts, chairlifts and ski lifts. For cross-country skiing in the country there are some links for distances up to 40 km.
In addition to skiing, in Zell am See it is possible to practice many other sports, but also participate in numerous festivals and fairs that are popular in all periods of year. Many hotels in Zell am See have spas for relaxing after a day spent skiing.
