
Split is the most important city in Dalmatia, Croatia. Overlooking the Adriatic Sea, this is a city with an ancient history dating back to 7000 years ago, inhabited by about 200 000 inhabitants. It is home to one of the most important universities in Croatia.
Split is a city in the Split-Dalmatia County in Croatia, known especially for Diocletian's Palace, built around 300 by emperor Diocletian: the walls of the building close the historical centre of the city.
Other attractions in Split and its surroundings are the Golden Gate, the cathedral with its famous bell tower, the Roman ruins of Salona with archaeological excavations, the temple of Jupiter, the Baptistery of Viseslav. The entire historical centre is rich in Roman and medieval ruins.
Regarding the industry sector, Split has a background in shipbuilding, along with chemicals and clothing production. Since 2005, the port of Split has become an important departure point towards several destinations in the Croatian coast as well as the Italian ports of Ancona and Pescara.
Split is a beautiful city to visit, with lots of places of interest, but it is also an excellent starting point for exploring the islands off the coast, such as Brac with the city of Supetar, Hvar, Korcula - with the town Vela Luka. Split is a hundred miles north of Dubrovnik.
