Zadar, was poetically called "stone boat" for its distinctive urban form of a peninsula surrounded by the Adriatic Sea. Renowned for its Sea Organ, a stone stairway, which through a mechanism of 35 sound tubes and the movement of water creates pleasant musical chords, is an ideal base for a holiday of sea and culture in Croatia.
With a length of 4 km and a width of just over 500 meters, the Zadar peninsula separates the old eastern bay from the Zadarski channel to the west. Just off the waterfront in Zadar you can find over 150 islands including Pag, with its lunar atmosphere, and the Kornati Islands, an archipelago of 89 tiny islets and rocks, declared a National Park.
In the heart of the old town you can see historical artifacts ranging from the mounds of Liburni and the Roman Forum, to the ancient Church of San Donato and a multitude of palaces and Romanesque, Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque churches.
The Venetian imprint is clearly visible on the facade of the "Door of the Sea", an emblem of the Battle of Lepanto, with symbol par excellence, the lion of San Marco, restored in the nineties. Today Zadar’s gates are the starting points for exploring the city.
There are many fish restaurants in the town, as well as cafes featuring a youthful bohemian atmosphere, and lounge-bars with sea views that animate the streets of Zadar.
