Bastia, the second city by population after Ajaccio in Corsica, is the first commercial port of the island. Founded as a bastille at the end of 1300 now offers a rich cultural and architectural heritage. In Bastia starts the beautiful mountainous promontory of Cap Corse.
Bastia, just over 40 000 inhabitants, is an important commercial and industrial center of Corsica. The city is the place where tourists arrive mainly by ferry, especially during summer months. It is located on the east coast of Corsica, overlooking the Tyrrhenian Sea, opposite the island of Elba.
In the historical centre there are several places of interest, including the Cathédrale Saint-Jean-Baptista, the Chapelle Notre Dame de Montserrat, the San Francisco convent, the oratory of the Confraternity of the Immaculate Conception, the Governors palace that houses the city’s museum of ethnography, the palace Bronzini de Caraffa with the library and a collection of women's clothing from 1700, and the Pavillon des Nobles XII, dating back to 1700, now used as a public building.
Most restaurants and hotels in Bastia are located in the centre, around Place Saint-Nicolas, the heart of the city. In the square there is a large kiosk where several events, concerts and exhibitions take place. Other areas where it is pleasant to walk around and find good restaurants are the streets around the Place de l'Hôtel de Ville or the Market Square, in addition to Boulevard Paoli, the main shopping street in Bastia.
