The small town of Bonifacio in Corsica, less than 3 000 inhabitants, is built on a rocky promontory overlooking the sea that has carved them out giving rise to caves and cliffs. The cape protects a fjord with the marina surrounded by high white walls.
Bonifacio, in the southernmost tip of Corsica, overlooks a stretch of sea called the Strait of Bonifacio that separates the island from Sardinia with Santa Teresa di Gallura. The strait is known for its strong winds that blow throughout the year and which can reach speeds of 150 kph.
The area of the promontory where Bonifacio lies, is inhabited since 6500 years ago, while the port area was occupied by the Greeks and Romans. The view of the houses on the cliffs is truly unique and worth a visit. Ferries take 1 hour to get to Santa Teresa di Gallura, 12 Km away.
The main attraction in Bonifacio is definitely its cliff: organized tours can be enjoyed by boat around the headland to visit the cliffs, the spectacular caves - such as that of Sdragonato, and the stacks. From the port side a stairway leads to the Citadel, where you will find many craft shops, taverns and restaurants.

Other places of interest are the narrow streets and squares of the upper town, the Church of Santa Maria Maggiore, Porta Genova - an ancient access point to the city, the Church of San Domenico in the Gothic style, Place des Armes and the King of Aragon staircase excavated on the cliffs over the sea. The availability of hotels in Bonifacio is large though the town is really small.
