The town of Chamonix-Mont-Blanc, also known as simply Chamonix, is a popular ski resort in Haute-Savoie, France. Both in winter and in summer, Chamonix is a fashionable tourist resort: the first hotel here dates back to 1770, built by the British, and its name was, of course, Hotel d'Angleterre.
In Chamonix, in the low season, there are about 6 000 people, who become almost 50 000 when it's time to ski or summer vacation. Legend tells that in this small village in Haute-Savoie, in France, permanently live people of over 40 nationalities.
The ski area for alpine skiing in Chamonix developes on three slopes: Brévent / Flégère facing Mont Blanc, Les Grands Montets, to the north, and Balme, on the border with Switzerland. From Chamonix starts the famous Funivia dei Ghiacciai which, crossing Mont Blanc, takes to Courmayeur.
The district of Les Grands Montets, which reaches 3,300 meters of altitude, offers multiple slopes and wonderful off-piste skiing areas, but also runs dedicated to snowboarding and freestyle, particularly in the locality of Lognan. In the district of Brévent / Flégère you will ski in a unique landscape, with very open slopes and suitable for all categories of skiers. The area of Balme, starting from Le Tour and Vallorcine, you can ski on two separate sides: Charamillon, in front of the Chamonix valley, and Vallorcine, between woods of firs, near the Swiss border.

In the valley there are other smaller districts, like les Planards, close to the centre of the village, suitable for beginners and children, as well as the small Le Savoy, with only two ski lifts and a treadmill. The famous off-piste in Chamonix are on the edge of glaciers, in the area of Vallée Blanche and on glacier Rognone. Cross-country skiing is practiced in the village of Les Bois or on the track of Argentière.
Staying in Chamonix, it is possible to enjoy any sort of hotels, both in structure from the typical alpine style and in those very modern with all the latest amenities: traditional cuisine and a great wine list are the crown jewels of hotels in Chamonix.
