Saint-Raphaël, in the French region of Provence-Cote d'Azur, is a tourist resort, but also a historical town. Saint-Raphaël is a very old city. Archaeological remains, dolmens and menhirs, show that this area was inhabited since the Paleolithic. More recently, Saint-Raphaël has been much appreciated by the Roman nobles who built their holiday villas here of which there are several artifacts that are preserved in the archaeological museum of the city.
Saint-Raphaël, which has always been a fishing village, has been able to beautifully exploit its geographical position, characterized by wonderful coves and beaches that surround it, in order to become a very popular seaside resort among a national and international clientele.
But even today, in the old port, the fish market is one of the most famous of the Cote d'Azur: the restaurants overlooking the harbor are famous for their Provencal specialties. Not to be missed is the Museum of Underwater Archaeology, with a large collection of relics from the many ships shipwrecked for several reasons off the coast.
In the city, it is worth visiting the church of San Raféu of the twelfth century, the 'Marina', the old port district where you will find the casino and several villas in the Palladian style, Valescure, also known as Vallis Curans (healing Valley), just outside city, a beautiful place from a natural point of view, with forests of pine trees and gardens where there are excellent golf courses.
