Toulouse is a city torn between tradition and future: here coexist one of the oldest academies of France, the Académie des Jeux Floraux, organizing literary prizes, and the Académie de l'Air et de l'Espace with La cité de l'espace, dedicated to space flight where you can see a copy of the full-size space station MIR.
City rich in traditions, history and art, Toulouse is an industrial and university city. It is famous throughout Europe for its aerospace industry: here have been designed and constructed the legendary Concorde and parts of French and European space rockets. The city, situated on the banks of the Garonne River, is on the border with Spain, at the foot of the Pyrenees.
The city offers tourists a religious and art heritage of inestimable value, such as the Monastery of Agostini, which nowadays is home to the Museum of Fine Arts, rather than the Basilica of Saint Sernin, a place of worship also because on the way that leads to Santiago de Compostela in Spain, or Notre-Dame du Taur in which there are the remains of Thomas Aquinas.
Among public buildings, worth a mention the town hall on the Place du Capitole, the Château d'eau, a stronghold/aqueduct on the Garonne, the Canal du Midi which runs through Toulouse reaching the Mediterranean sea, and the entire artistic heritage filed in museums and art schools.

Toulouse is the second university city in France with a university that dates back to 1230 and today provides education to over 100 000 students. This implies that hostels and cheap hotels are very popular, as well as the chance to rent rooms even for short periods. The area most frequented by students is near the Place du Capitole: from rue du Taur you dive in the 'Latin' district of Toulouse. Place du Capitole is the heart of the city with the town hall and the nineteenth-century arcades, the classy cafes such as the Grand Café Albert or Café des Arcades.
Les Carmes is the trendy district of the city, with boutiques and shopping streets, places to enjoy live music, but also several antique shops, used items, musical instruments and of course many art galleries.
Most hotels are located in the historical centre, where over time it has been possible to place side by side Renaissance palaces and large, modern hotel chains. Many hotels have agreements with the Toulouse Croisières, which offers tourist boats that travel along the river passing very old and refined bridges and buildings.
Last but not least, food and wine: duck is the specialty of the region of Toulouse, but do not miss the Cassoulet, a dish of various meats with white beans. Among wines, you must try those produced by the same administration, which also owns an estate, Candie, which grows white and black grapes and ages wines in oak tanks.
