
Aachen, North Rhine-Westphalia, is the westernmost city of Germany, on the border with Belgium and the Netherlands. Founded as a Roman fort, in the Middle Ages Aachen was the residence of emperors and kings, including Charlemagne, who appreciated the hot springs. The thermal areas of the city are both in the north-east, between Monheimsallee and the Carolus Thermen Bad Aachen, and in the south, in the district of Burtscheid.
Historical and thermal city, Aachen is a World Heritage Site by UNESCO since 1978. You can realize the millennial history of the city admiring the many sights like the Duomo, near the Town Hall, built in 1800 by Charlemagne and gradually made more spectacular by further actions. Time after time, kings and emperors adorned this monument that contains the most beautiful treasure trove of Europe. The city hall of Aachen, Rathaus, dates back to the fourteenth century, when it was the palace of Charlemagne. Also worth a visit the old city gates of Ponttor and Marschiertor.

Works of art and museum make this city a real treasure. Starting from the Ludwig Forum for International Art, exhibition room with more than 3,000 works including those of Jörg Immendorf and Andy Warhol. The Couven museum is a typical middle-class house in Rococo style of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. The International Museum of newspaper, Internationales Zeitungsmuseum, exhibits a collection of over 160 000 newspapers telling the story of the newspaper in the world. In the Museum of Printen, Printenmuseum, you can watch the production of the city’s specialty, the Printen, a spiced honey gingerbread. In the Museum Suermondt- Ludwig you enter the world of image, with paintings, sculptures, glass works, drawings and prints. And finally, in the beautiful museum of telecommunications, Fernmeldemuseum, you will discover the magic of communication techniques in the last three hundred years.
The position of Aachen on the border of three countries, makes it very attractive also to go shopping. In the city there are wonderful shops, showrooms and boutiques of the most exclusive brands. The downtown area is of course the more appealing, between the narrow streets and around the cathedral or the town hall. In the centre there is the pedestrian area between the Adalbertstrasse and Großkölnstraße, with shops and department stores.
