Aachen, North Rhine-Westphalia, is the westernmost city of Germany, on the border with Belgium and the Netherlands. Founded as a Roman fort, in the Middle Ages Aachen was the residence of emperors and kings, including Charlemagne, who appreciated the hot springs. The thermal areas of the city are both in the north-east, between Monheimsallee and the Carolus Thermen Bad Aachen, and in the south, in the district of Burtscheid.

Works of art and museum make this city a real treasure. Starting from the Ludwig Forum for International Art, exhibition room with more than 3,000 works including those of Jörg Immendorf and Andy Warhol. The Couven museum is a typical middle-class house in Rococo style of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. The International Museum of newspaper, Internationales Zeitungsmuseum, exhibits a collection of over 160 000 newspapers telling the story of the newspaper in the world. The position of Aachen on the border of three countries, makes it very attractive also to go shopping. In the city there are wonderful shops, showrooms and boutiques of the most exclusive brands. The downtown area is of course the more appealing, between the narrow streets and around the cathedral or the town hall. In the centre there is the pedestrian area between the Adalbertstrasse and Großkölnstraße, with shops and department stores.
