Augsburg dates from 15 BC; based on a Roman military settlement, until the end of the Renaissance it has been an important economic and commercial center. During World War Two, the city was heavily bombed and the historical centre completely destroyed.
Nowadays, Augsburg has about 250 000 inhabitants and the centre has been rebuilt. The Cathedral dates back to 900 and retains the oldest stained glass of Germany dating back to 1100.
The Rathausplatz, the square of the town hall, houses the Perlachturm, a twelfth-century Romanesque tower 70 meters high, the church of St. Peter and Augustusbrunnen, a fountain of the second half of 1500. St. Anne's church was one of the main centers of Martin Luther’s reform, and retains important testimonials such as the Fuggerkapelle, a Renaissance chapel.
The Rathaus is the town hall, built around 1620, destroyed by bombing in 1944 and reopened in 1962: inside there is the famous Golden Hall (the Goldener Saal), so named because the ceiling and wooden portals are covered with gold foils weighing 2.6 kilograms.
