Bochum, 370 000 inhabitants in the land of North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany, is located in the Ruhr industrial region. Important university centre, Bochum is home to one of the largest universities in the country, the Ruhr-Universität.
The main tourist attraction in Bochum is the mining complex where there is also the Westphalian Industrial Museum. The coal mine Zeche Hannover and the mine Zeche Knirps are in an area of old industrial sites that tell the history of industrialization of the city.
The Rhenish Industrial Museum, Rheinisches Industriemuseum, visited every year by 400 000 people, is part of this great show where you will also find the Zeche Knirps, a “mine for kids” where children can learn and experience mining.
Other places of interest are the Jahrhunderthalle, now home to cultural and sporting events, the church of St. Peter and Paul, the Zeiss planetarium for the discovery of space and stars.
Bochum is a shopping city, with many shops and boutiques and large shopping centers such as City Point Bochum on Kortumstrasse, the shopping street of the city, and the Ruhr-Park - one of the first shopping malls opened in Europe.
