Chemnitz, a city in central-eastern Germany, in the Land of Saxony, is a blend of art, architecture, museums, culture and industrial parks. Chemnitz is an ancient city with more than 800 years of history. It is the third largest city by population of Saxony, after Leipzig and Dresden, and is near the border with the Czech Republic. One of the peculiarities of Chemnitz are the urban parks and forests, which are more than a thousand hectares and include two protected natural areas.
Chemnitz is a city of the former German Democratic Republic: since 1990, it has been completely redesigned with the help of leading architects such as Helmut Jahn and Hans Kollhoff, so that whole areas around the centre have become commercial areas with shops and department stores.
Chemnitz was called for a long time ' Saxon Manchester' as it is an important industrial city in Germany. During the Soviet era, the city was renamed Karl-Marx-Stadt, but a referendum at the end of last century, gave it back its original name.
