Darmstadt, city in the Hessen Land, is located about thirty kilometers south of Frankfurt. It is called “City of Science” because of the presence of many scientific and space institutions. Darmstadt hosts, in fact, the headquarters of the Technische Universität of ESOC (European Space Operations Centre), the Esa (European Space Agency), the Gesellschaft für Schwerionenforschung, a research center for chemistry, and EUMETSAT which manages Meteosat satellites: the title of City of Science is more than deserved.
But Darmstadt is also a historical city - the ancient capital of Hesse, and a cultural center, with many Art Nouveau buildings, such as the area known as the colony of Jugendstil artists, Mathildenhöhe, an area with decorated houses in bright colors, or Waldspirale palace, in the Bürgerpark district, where living spaces coexist in perfect harmony with nature. Other attractions for children and adults are certainly the Vivarium Darmstadt, a very well-kept zoo, and Cybernarium, the virtual museum, a look into the future, with many installations of 3D computer graphics.
