Dresden is the capital and the largest urban center in the Land of Saxony, Germany. It is called the "Florence on the Elbe" for the presence of beautiful places and museums of international importance. Dresden, a city in Saxony on the Elbe, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2009. In February 1945 the city was heavily bombed by Allied forces and rebuilt in subsequent decades more beautiful than before. Today, it is a modern city with over half a million inhabitants, full of life and cultural activities.
The centre of the old town, the Altstadt, is located south of the river: the main square is Altmarkt, overlooked by the town hall. A short distance away there is another square, the Neumarkt, with the monument to Martin Luther. On the square there are several baroque palaces, the Hofkirche, the Zwinger and the Albertinum, within which there is the Gallery of Modern Art. On the north side of River Elbe, there is the new town, Neustadt, with the area called Altendresden, mainly residential.
Dresden is home to one of the most important art galleries in the world, Gemäldegalerie, with works by Caravaggio, Raphael, Velasquez, El Greco, etc.. The Frauenkirche, the Church of Our Lady, was built in 1700, inspired by Italian baroque churches and restored from the bombings only after the reunification of Germany.
