The central station in Dresden, by the architects Ernst Giese and Paul Weidner, was designed in 1892. Opened in 1897, the Dresden Hauptbahnhof is located on the south edge of the historical centre. The station was heavily damaged by bombing during World War II, but soon rebuilt and today it is one of the most important railway stations of Germany. Around the station there are several 4-star hotels.
