Essen, in the North Rhine-Westphalia region of Germany, is inside the Ruhr area. It is the city of the steel industry, headed by the Krupp family, native from the city. The city of Essen, just under 600 000 inhabitants, has managed to transform itself over time. From an industrial city, to a tourist and cultural center of national importance. The city dates from the ninth century, thanks to the industrial revolution it has become an important production center in the Ruhr region, linked by an indissoluble bond with the Krupp family and its plants of coal mining and steel production.
In recent decades the economic crisis has pushed the city into another direction, making it a tourist and cultural center to the point that in 2010, Essen has been named European Capital of Culture. Moreover, despite being at the center of one of the most industrialized areas of Europe, Essen is surrounded by green forest (Stadtwald is close to the city): near the town there are also the lakes Baldeneysee and Grugapark.
The focus of the attractions in Essen is the Zollverein industrial complex. This is a large mine complex converted for cultural and leisure aims, dating back to 1932: it is made in Bauaus style, and today it is an impressive example of industrial archaeology, where thanks to the guided tours you can see the extraction plants and old equipments.
