Halle an der Saale, a town of 230 000 inhabitants in the Saxony-Anhalt region, Germany, is a great tourist destination about thirty miles away from Leipzig. The road leading from the south-east station to the centre is the Leipziger Strasse, which becomes the highway towards Leipzig.
The historical centre of Halle an der Saale is very interesting from a tourist point of view. There are many palaces, monuments and great churches telling the history of this city, which in the ninth century was an important trading center for salt, mined nearby.
Halle is an industrial city famous for steel, mechanicals and rubber production, but has also a broad cultural heritage. On the market square, the Marktplatz, you can admire the monument to Händel, composer of the first half of the 700. The square also hosts the Marktkirche, Church of St. Mary, with a great organ. It is worth visiting also the Stadtgottesacker, a magnificent Renaissance cemetery.
There are several museums in the city. The regional museum of prehistory, closed on Mondays, the Museum of the Beatles on the Alter Markt, the Technical Museum and that dedicated to the history of salt – the Halloren-und Salinemuseum, built in a former saltpan of the Prussian era.
Of course the main events are linked to the composer Handel. In June, in his honor is held the International Music Festival, while in autumn it’s time for Days of Music, Hallische Musiktage - for young musicians and composers.
