Karlsruhe, the third largest city in Baden-Württemberg after Stuttgart and Mannheidel, is known as the 'City of the law' because it hosts the seat of the Federal Court of Justice (Bundesgerichtshof) and the Federal Constitutional Court (Bundesverfassungsgericht). Besides being known as the 'City of law', Karlsruhe is also known as Fächerstadt, i.e. fan-shaped city. This is because the plant of this small town resembles a fan (some say the sun): at the centre there is the castle with the tower and from here branch off the streets.
The castle is situated near the main square, the Marktplatz, which has a central pyramid placed on the grave of Karl-Wilhelm, founder of the city. Two other castles are major tourist attractions. The castle of Karlsruhe, in Baroque style within which there is the Museum of Baden, surrounded by a park with a botanical garden, and the castle Gottesaue, Renaissance style, located in Oststadt (eastern town) site of a major music school (Musikhochschule).
On the city's central square there is the Town Hall (Rathaus), a church by the architect Friedrich Weinbrenner and the aforementioned pyramid.
Other landmarks are the Staatliche Kunsthalle, the art gallery, the Badische Staatstheater (National Theater of Baden). Do not miss the museums, including the regional museum of the Grand Duchy of Baden in the castle of Karlsruhe and the State Museum of Natural History (Staatliches Museum für Naturkunde) the most important of Germany.
