Kassel on the Fulda River, northern Hesse in west-central Germany, was completely destroyed by bombing and rebuilt in the '50s. There are many reasons to visit Kassel, a city of about 200 000 inhabitants. This is a very green city, with many urban parks, there are several historical monuments, some of which have been reconstructed after the bombings of World War II, there are important museums and art galleries and, not least, many bars and restaurants and a beautiful historical centre where you can stroll and shop. Kassel is famous for Documenta, an international event held every five years (next in 2012), on modern and contemporary art.
The main original historic buildings are located on the outskirts of the city least affected during the war. For example, the Wilhelmshöhe Palace, located on a hill, built in 1786, surrounded by a park with several monuments, such as Oktagon, an octagonal stone structure, the Löwenburg ("Castle of Lions"), built in 1870, which now houses the Museum Schloss Wilhelmshöhe, with collections of great importance.
In Kassel have lived and worked for over 30 years the Brothers Grimm: from the city starts a route of over 400 km called the Fairy-Tale Road (Deutsche Märchenstrasse), which explores the places, woods and villages, described in the fairy tales.

Other places of interest in Kassel are the baroque park Karlsaue / Orangerie, in the Orangerie castle, with greenhouses and spaces for relaxation, and the State Theatre (Staatstheater Kassel) dating back to 1604. The range of museums in Kassel is really important. Among the main ones, the Fridericianum Museum, where Documenta is held, the Museum of the Brothers Grimm (Brüder-Grimm-Museum) with papers on the life and works of the two writers, the Museum of Natural History (Naturkundemuseum), built in 1600, with halls dedicated to biology, botany, geology and zoology, the museum of crafts arts and sculpture (Museum für Kunsthandwerk und Plastik) devoted to porcelain, glass and sculpture.
But as already said, Kassel is a city of entertainment and shopping, thanks to the many shopping malls such as Kurfürstengalerie and Königsgalerie. In the Kurfürsten gallery there are shops, wellness centers, the famous Varieté Starclub and the casino. In Königsgalerie there are over 70 stores including boutiques and delicatessens.
