Kiel, a German city in the Schleswig-Holstein Land on the Baltic Sea, is famous for the Kieler Woche, the annual regatta of sailboats. Kiel, a major port for ferries and cruise ships on the Baltic Sea, is located about eighty kilometers from Lübeck and 90 from Hamburg. From an economic point of view, the city subsists on service sector and shipbuilding. But also from a touristic point of view it offers several attractions.
The bay and harbor for small and medium-sized boats, are both very nice. During the ten days of the annual Kieler Woche, when more than 2000 boats, mostly sailboats, there are over 400 races. This is the most interesting area of the city, with many bars and restaurants that can accommodate more than 3 million people.
In and around the city there are several museums and cultural sites associated with sea life. Kiel is also an important university town and certainly a favorite destination for shopping. In the city centre you can visit the town hall, with a tower that offers panoramic views over the fjord; you can walk along the shore of the Hindenburg and over the Hörnbrücke bridge, a drawbridge extremely technological. In the port there is a magnificent ship, the Gorch Fock.
