It's been more than twenty years since the fall of the Berlin Wall and the end of the GDR, the German Democratic Republic, and Leipzig is still in full transformation. The past is restored and new buildings are made by artists and creative people. What is presented today to the tourists is a beautiful city full of life, shopping opportunities, local pubs open until dawn. Leipzig is a very important city in eastern Germany, from a commercially and culturally point of view. The Leipzig Trade Fair is a meeting point for business and the city is one of the capitals of music: here were born and worked Bach, Mendelssohn and Wagner, and world-class orchestras like the Gewandhaus.

Monuments, museums, places of interest: the historical centre of Leipzig is rich in monuments and historic buildings in the Renaissance and late Gothic style. In the rooms of the old town hall, Altes Rathaus, Johann Sebastian Bach signed his employment contract as a conductor in the church of St. Thomas. In this church is buried the composer. Another point of interest is the Monument to the Battle of Nations, which has a viewing platform almost 100 meters high. For cultural events not to be missed are the programming of the Opera House, a visit to the house of Mendelssohn and the building of Grassimuseum on Johannisplatz which houses the Museum of Musical Instruments of the University, and also the Museum of Crafts and Museum of Ethnology. The Bach Archive in Bose building near the church of St. Thomas is a permanent exhibition dedicated to the composer's life.
The new exhibition center, with its steel and glass architecture, is located north of the centre of Leipzig, near the airport Leipzig-Halle, with over five pavilions dominating the entrance of the Glashalle, a building in glass and steel.
Shopping and nightlife: the historical centre of Leipzig is a tangle of covered passages with stores and boutiques. The most elegant shops can be found in the immense galleries of the new Hauptbahnhof-Promenaden mall, near the central station, and galleries Mädler Passage and Specks Hof. The traditional shopping streets are Hainstraße, Nikolaistraße and Petersstraße. Very unusual to see is the great Saturday market on the square in front of the Festwiese, near the stadium. The evening and night life of Leipzig revolve around Kneipen, where you can always eat Sauerbraten, traditional dish of meat marinade. The best tavernas are along the Dittrichring, Holbeinstrasse, Bosestrasse and Gottschedstraße. Some renowned beer houses in Leipzig are the famous Auerbach's Keller (the favorite by Goethe) or Ratskeller in Lotterstrasse. The nightclubs of Leipzig are always intriguing, often with live music where you dance until dawn.
Accommodation: As for the history of Leipzig and its buildings, even hotels are either very traditional or fitted out in modern facilities. Many old and magnificent buildings of the communist era have been converted into hotels: here the service is still to be a little improved, but they offer good value for money. However, some have achieved a very good level, such as the Fürstenhof or Westin Leipzig with a wonderful swimming pool.
