Mainz is also famous for its theaters, including the Unterhaus Mainz, with amusing cabaret shows, and Mainzer Kammerspiele, used for experimental theater. In the old town, the main street is the Augustinerstraße, with the Kirschgarten garden.
Among the monuments that can not be missed by tourists, there are the Cathedral of St. Martin, made of reddish sandstone, the Kurfürstliche Burg, castle of the Electors, near the bridge over the Rhine, which is home to the Roman-Germanic Museum, St. Stephan church built in 990 and with glass windows by Marc Chagall.

The most important museums of the city are the Gutenberg Museum in the historical centre, one of the oldest museums about press industry; the Kupferberg Museum on the history of sparkling wine with cellars and historical barrels; the Museum of Natural History (Naturhistorisches Museum), which boasts a rich collection of dinosaurs’ footprints and prehistoric insects; and the Treasury of the Cathedral and Diocesan Museum (Dom-und Diözesanmuseum) inside the cathedral, the museum of ancient navigation (Museum für Antike Schiffahrt) with the wrecks of vessels of the Roman fleet.
In the historical center of Mainz, close to the typical half-timbered houses, there are many shops and malls. The shopping streets are Augustinerstrasse, the Kirschgarten the Schönbornstrasse and the Grebenstrasse. The state capital of Rhineland-Palatinate Land is a very touristy town, so the hotels’ offer in Mainz is extensive and excellent.
