The historical centre of Nuremberg is divided into two areas, St. Sebald and St. Lorenz, and is surrounded by over 5 km of ancient walls with 80 towers. In the two areas, separated by river Pegnitz, you can visit the beautiful church of St. Sebaldus and the Gothic Church of St. Lorenz with its massive bell towers. In the centre there is also the Frauenkirche, Church of Our Lady, rebuilt after the war, with a carillon with statues of the electors, and the Church of St. Martha, fourteenth-century, which in 1600 was the seat of the Meistersinger von Nuremberg.
In the centre, other attractions are the Konigstortum tower and the Königstor gate, and the whole neighborhood of the artisans, the Handwerkerhof. The main square in downtown is the Hauptmarkt, where the Christkindlesmarkt takes place in December, the most famous Christmas markets of Germany. In the middle of the square there is the Schoner Brunnen, a fountain of the fourteenth century, 19 meters high.
