Saarbrücken, capital of the German state of Saarland, is near the border with France and heavily influenced by this, in the style of life, in architecture and in the restaurants, called bistros, which are located around the main square.
It is an important university and cultural center of the Land of Saarland, which suffered a lot of French influence and which owes most of its Baroque architecture to architect FJ Stengel. The squares Schlossplatz, Ludwigsplatz and St. Johanner Markt (central square) are evidence of his own style called 'Stengelian'. One of the main attractions of Saarbrücken are the Völklinger Hütte steel mills, declared World Heritage by UNESCO, a beautiful example of industrial architecture, nowadays in use as a location for events.
Another interesting place is the castle, which in summer becomes a venue for concerts of classical music but also rock. In Ludwigsplatz there is the church St. Ludwig, rebuilt after World War II, in baroque style. The range of museums in Saarbrücken is very wide: the museum of the Saarland keeps works from the late Middle Ages to 1900; in the regional gallery, the Landesgalerie, there are works by artists of the twentieth century native of the Saarland; the Museum of Prehistory and Early History (Museum für Vor-und Frühgeschichte) offers instead Merovingian, Celtic and Roman findings.

Thanks to the numerous arcades of the historical centre, shopping in Saarbrücken is possible even in bad weather. The best shops are located around the St. Johanner Markt square, in the Chinese quarter around Nauwieser square and in the old town, in the district of Luisenviertel.
The exhibition center of Saarbrücken is very important and especially close to the centre. Saarbrücken Messe offers 13 different halls with over 25 thousand square meters of covered space: Every year there are about fifteen trade fairs and exhibitions, among which are the major exhibition of leisure and tourism (Freizeit / Reisemarkt Saarbrücken / Museumswelten), the International specialized exhibition GastroTech (Internationale Saarmesse mit Fachmesse GastroTech) and the European exhibition of consumers (Welt Der Familie, Europäische Verbrauchermesse).
