Schwerin, the capital of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, is a 'fairy tale' city. Here nothing is missing: forests, lakes, castles on water, art and culture. Schwerin, overlooking the homonymous lake, the fourth largest in Germany, is the ideal place to live in, if you're lucky, or anyway to visit as tourists. The city is surrounded by woods and forests, it has a very beautiful historical centre and symbol of the city is the magnificent castle perched on an island connected by bridges to the mainland.
The castle, Schwerin Schloss, is surrounded by beautiful gardens and inside you can visit its magnificent rooms. In front of the castle extends what is considered the most beautiful square in northern Germany, which is overlooked by the Mecklenburg State Theatre, the State Museum, the Altes Palais and the Victory Column. But all of Schwerin is rich in tourist attractions.
On the Marktplatz there is the Old Town Hall (Rathaus Altstädtisches) and behind stands the cathedral, gothic architecture with murals of the fourteenth century and the towers from which you can admire an enchanting panorama. Art is one of the cornerstones of Schwerin. The Mecklenburgisches Staatstheater, the Mecklenburg State Theatre, in Italian Renaissance style, always offers performances of operas, plays, ballets and concerts.

The State Museum (Staatliches Museum) of Schwerin is the largest in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania with a collection of over 3500 paintings, 60,000 prints and drawings and over 10 thousand objects of artistic craftsmanship. In the Archaeological Museum (Archäologisches Landesmuseum Mecklenburg-Vorpommern) is showcased the culture and history of Germanic and Slavic peoples, while in the open air folklore museum in the Mecklenburg (Mecklenburgisches Volkskundemuseum - Freilichtmuseum Mueß), on the shores of the lake, on a 'area of 4 hectares are presented buildings, huts of shepherds, old forges, the fire station and school of the typical nineteenth-century village of Mecklenburg.
Schwerin sides to art a great desire to live and have fun. In the old town it is wonderful to wander the narrow streets, in restaurants and cafes, and especially in the shops where you can go shopping. The main streets for shopping are Mecklenburgstraße, Friedrichstraße, the Puschkinstrasse and Schlossstraße. In Schlossparkcenter, an arcade in Marienplatz, there are many shops under one large glass roof, while the Wurm, always on the main square, is the heart of trendy events with a large shopping center.
Famous throughout Germany is the festival of Schwerin Castle, which takes place every year - with the participation of international soloists - as well as the Schleswig-Holstein Haus, Schwerin's cultural forum, held in an old brick inn, venue of art, graphics, painting, photography.
The hotels offer in Schwerin is really great. In the centre you can stay in beautiful historical homes, but further north, near the station, there are very typical family-run inns. There are also the great hotels of the main international chains.
