Schwerin, the capital of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, is a 'fairy tale' city. Here nothing is missing: forests, lakes, castles on water, art and culture. The State Museum (Staatliches Museum) of Schwerin is the largest in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania with a collection of over 3500 paintings, 60,000 prints and drawings and over 10 thousand objects of artistic craftsmanship. In the Archaeological Museum (Archäologisches Landesmuseum Mecklenburg-Vorpommern) is showcased the culture and history of Germanic and Slavic peoples, while in the open air folklore museum in the Mecklenburg (Mecklenburgisches Volkskundemuseum - Freilichtmuseum Mueß), on the shores of the lake, on a 'area of 4 hectares are presented buildings, huts of shepherds, old forges, the fire station and school of the typical nineteenth-century village of Mecklenburg.
Schwerin sides to art a great desire to live and have fun. In the old town it is wonderful to wander the narrow streets, in restaurants and cafes, and especially in the shops where you can go shopping. The main streets for shopping are Mecklenburgstraße, Friedrichstraße, the Puschkinstrasse and Schlossstraße. In Schlossparkcenter, an arcade in Marienplatz, there are many shops under one large glass roof, while the Wurm, always on the main square, is the heart of trendy events with a large shopping center.
Famous throughout Germany is the festival of Schwerin Castle, which takes place every year - with the participation of international soloists - as well as the Schleswig-Holstein Haus, Schwerin's cultural forum, held in an old brick inn, venue of art, graphics, painting, photography.
