Weimar, a city of Thuringia, is famous for several reasons: it is the largest cultural center of Germany, it gave its name to the Weimar Republic, here the Congress met after the end of World War and approved the new constitution of the German Republic, and it is 8 kilometers from Buchenwald, the Nazi concentration camp, which now houses a museum and documentation center.
Weimar is a beautiful city that finds its best expression in culture: here lived important people and artists like Schiller, Goethe, Liszt, Bach, Herder and Nietzsche. In Weimar, Walter Gropius founded the Bauhaus school of art and architecture: in 1999, Weimar was named European Capital of Culture.
The city boasts many tourist attractions, starting from the Cathedral on Herderplatz. In Theatreplatz stands a large monument to Goethe and the Bauhaus Museum, with works of graphic arts and liberal arts. It is worth visiting the several homes of poets, Wittum palace - where the Duchess Anna Amalia brought together artists and scholars, and where the aristocratic life of the city is documented, the house of Schiller, Schillershaus on Schillerstrasse, where everything has remained the same from the end of 1700, when the poet and writer lived here. And finally, the Green Castle of 1570 - which hosts one of the first public libraries - and the church of St. Peter and Paul, now the Church of Herder.
