Wetzlar is a city in the Hesse region, in the heart of Germany, located about sixty miles north of Frankfurt. Set in the valley of the River Lahn, this is a beautiful small town of 50 000 inhabitants surrounded by low mountains and forests. The city has preserved many old buildings built in different styles: Romanesque, Gothic and Baroque. Throughout the old town, Altstadt, buildings are preserved as they were in the late eighteenth century.
The best buildings are mainly located around the historical squares, the Buttermarkt-Domplatz - where the butter market was held and which overlooks the Cathedral, the Fischmarkt - where the fish market was held, the Eisenmarkt – hosting the market of iron and Kornmarkt where the cereals market was held.
Other important sights of interest in Wetzlar are Wetzlarer Dom, the Cathedral, built starting from 1230, the old bridge over the Lahn River, which separates the old from the new city, where lie the remains of ancient fortifications of the XIII and XIV centuries with some very interesting findings as Schneiderturm, the Tailor's Tower, the Säuturm or the Kalsmuntpforte, Kalsmunt Gate.
