The town of Wittenberg, in the Saxony-Anhalt region, is famous because here in 1517 Martin Luther published his Theses, which became the foundation of the Protestant Reformation. But Wittenberg is also famous for being the birthplace of the great Renaissance painter Lucas Cranach and Philip Melanchthon, a theologian friend of Luther.
The beautiful medieval town of Wittenberg in Saxony was the cradle of a great revolution in religion. Here, for over thirty years at the beginning of 1500, Martin Luther lived and lectured to students from all over Europe, and especially he posted the 95 Theses on the doors of the main city church, which gave rise to the Protestant Reformation.
The house, the church and the castle where Luther lived and worked since 1996 are protected by the UNESCO as World Heritage Sites. The Schlosskirche, church and castle of the fifteenth century, is the main monument of the city. The wooden doors on which Luther nailed his theses have been replaced with bronze doors after a fire. The church contains the tombs of Luther and of the theologian and reformer Melanchthon.
Other attractions include the Church of St. Marine (Stadtkirche) with paintings by Lucas Cranach the Elder, the ancient palace of the Prince Elector, the home of painter Cranach, the main square with a Baroque fountain, the Renaissance town hall, the Lutherhalle and Melanchtonhaus, a museum dedicated to Philip Melanchthon.

The city, which lies on the banks of the Elbe River, has less than 50 000 inhabitants. In June, when the most important town festival is held - The Marriage of Luther, Luthers Hochzeit, the population doubles in number. This festival, held annually in the second weekend of June, dates back to 1994 when it was decided to celebrate the marriage of Luther and Katharina von Bora, a nun who left the convent to follow the new religion of her husband.
