Wuppertal, in the North Rhine-Westphalia region, is located in the south of the Ruhr industrial area, about thirty miles east of Dusseldorf and 40 north of Cologne. Wuppertal has a population of just under 400 000 inhabitants and it is a very recent city, created in 1929 from the merger of two municipalities, Elberfeld and Barmen. Wuppertal is a unique city situated on different levels, with many ups and downs, steep climbs and descents due to the presence of several hills.
The main attraction of Wuppertal is definitely the monorail of almost 14 kilometers, the Wuppertal Schwebebahn, which joins the two banks of the river Wupper, which was opened in 1901 by Emperor Wilhelm II.
There is no shortage of major historic buildings, many in the classical style, dating back to the Art Nouveau and the Bauhaus periods. In Wuppertal there is one of the major German museums, the Van Der Heydt Museum, which houses collections of works and masterpieces of the nineteenth and twentieth century. The Tanztheater Wuppertal has a great international importance: this is a ballet company that leads its performances in all the world.
