
Chania is a town on the island of Crete, located between the peninsula of Rodopi and Akrotiri. The latter hosts the city's airport, while the port is in the nearby village of Souda. Chania was conquered by the Venetians around the thirteenth century and later by the Ottomans in the mid-1600. There are numerous remains of the Venetian domination starting from the walls with ramparts surrounding the old city and the port. The best preserved ramparts are Schiavo, San Salvador and Sabbionara.
Other attractions are the same port, consisting of two docks in rather low water; the mosque of the Janissaries which is now an exhibition and convention center; the entire old town with Venetian and Ottoman ancient coat of arms on the doors of the houses; the neighborhood Kastelli, one of the oldest parts of town; the archaeological museum housed in a former Franciscan monastery; the church of St. Nicholas dating back to the beginning of 1300, in 1821 square, Splantzia district.
Chania is a picturesque town on the whole, everywhere you can breathe the air of history. Its historical centre is full of ancient buildings, but also clubs and shops to delight tourists. There is no shortage of modern buildings, such as the municipal market.
As in all towns of Crete, also Chania’s beaches are close to the centre and accessible by foot. The areas most frequented and famous are Chrissi Akt and, a short distance from the city, Agioi Apostoloi and Germaniko Poul.

Besides tourism, the economy of Chania is based on the cultivation of olive trees and citrus fruit and wine production. Chania is also famous for its handmade pottery, carved wood and metal. Also important is the art of making knives, which are sold in typical shops called 'macheradika' along Karaoli Dimitriou and Sifaka streets. Chania is also home to several university departments of engineering and technology.
