Heraklion is the largest city of Crete, a beautiful Greek island of the Aegean Sea in the Mediterranean Sea. A city rich in treasures and legends, Heraklion is one of the most popular tourist destinations of the island. The taste of the Orient that you can breathe in Heraklion is continuously mixed with the spirit of classical Greece of which the city and its surroundings are imbued. The archaeological treasures allow tourists to take a dip in the past, while the colors and liveliness of the city centre refer to the vivacity of Arab and Middle Eastern locations.
Near Heraklion there is Knossos, with the remains of the palace of Minos where the legend tells there was the labyrinth inhabited by the Minotaur, the bull-man, killed by Theseus with the help of Queen Arianna. In the city there are monuments and treasures of inestimable value, many of which are present in the archaeological museum. The museum contains finds from excavations in the main sites of the island - Knossos, Archanes, Phaistos and Zakros - from the Neolithic, Mycenae, Greek and Rome age. Inside the rooms are displayed statues, frescoes, ceramics and jewelry.

The city of Heraklion is also an important commercial center, where shopping is a pleasure. In the historical centre, in Daedalou Street and 1866 Street, there are boutiques and craft shops, while very popular is the Saturday market. The centre is closed between the remains of the Venetian Walls of 1500, with the Martinengo bastion and the Gates of the Pantocrator. Other places to visit are Castello a Mare, also of Venetian origin, the arsenal and the city's main square, Plateia Eleftherias, with cafes and clubs. The main course of Heraklion is the August 25 way: in Venizelos Square there is located the famous fountain Morosini.
Not to be missed, both for adults and children, the natural history museum on the road to Knossos, with a rich botanical garden, and Thalassocosmos, the aquarium in Crete, a structure of 5000 square meters with more than 330 tanks of different marine species. Heraklion is accessible by air. The international airport of Heraklion is a few kilometers from the city and is reached by the main airline companies and many low cost airlines.
