Piraeus, in the Attica region, Greece, is a large city near Athens. The city has the major port of Greece and one of the largest in the Mediterranean for the number of passengers and goods in transit. This was the port used in classical Greece and since then has continued to expand and take on international importance.
From Piraeus, central Athens is only about ten miles, so the influx of tourists is enormous. Piraeus is divided into three zones, with three different ports.
The central area is the commercial area and the docking point for ferries and cruise ships. The port of Zea, called Passalimani, is used by ferries and speedboats to reach the islands of the Saronic Gulf (including Hydra, Poros, Aegina), and finally the small picturesque port of Mikrolimano - with private boats, sailboats, fishing boats and yachts.
The most historic part of Piraeus is in an area called Kantharos, which is also the heart of city life, with restaurants and bars. Even in the area of Zea there are many restaurants and sports shops. The area of Mikrolimano is a popular tourist spot, a small port with tavernas where you can enjoy fresh fish.
Another fashionable district of the Piraeus is Kastella on Elias Prophetis hill. Towards the top there are very narrow streets with interesting buildings, but mostly you can admire a unique view over the whole Piraeus. Do not miss the Monastiraki flea market, especially in the Plateia Avissynias square.
