The Dublin Castle is on Cork Hill, Dame Street, in the city centre, near Temple Bar. Built in 1200, this was the seat of British government until Ireland’s independence, in 1922. Today the castle is the seat of Irish government. In a huge hall of the castle every year is held a major concert on the occasion of the May Public Holiday weekend, in late May. The castle is also home to the Chester Beatty Library, a collection of paintings, documents and manuscripts from ancient Babylon, Egypt, Greece, China and Southeast Asia.
In front of the Library there are the State Apartments, rooms of 1700, the most famous of which are the Picture Gallery and the Wedgewood Room. The castle can be visited only with a tour guide. In the area there is also the St Stephen's Green (Irish: Faiche Stiabhna), which is a public park, but also a large shopping center. More than a hundred hotels are available in the area, from budget to luxurious, with 5 star services and comforts.
