The historic centre of Amsterdam is one of the best preserved in the world. The old town is of medieval origin and extends in a tangle of channels: it is divided from the Damrak in Oude Zijde (Old City) and Nieuwe Zijde (New city). The list of touristic attractions in the centre is huge, all included in the Grachtengordel, the channel belt.
