Fatima is not only a Portuguese town with an ancient history, but also one of the holy places of Christianity. The Sanctuary of Fátima is one of the main places of worship in the world. The story / legend has it that, between May and September of 1917, the Virgin appeared to three young shepherds first, then tens of thousands of pilgrims. The three young shepherds, went down in history, were Lucia dos Santos, Francisco and Jacinta Marto.
There are over 4 million pilgrims visiting Fàtima every year to honor the apparition of 1917. Faith brings many of them to mortify their bodies with various punishments, such as slowly walking on their knees through the square and then climbing up the steps of the Temple.
However, the story of Fátima is much older and still related to sanctity. It is said that during the Christian Reconquest (started shortly after the year 1000) of the territories occupied by the Arabs, a young Muslim woman, Fatima, converted to Christianity for the sake of a Knight Templar, Traga-Mouros.
Anyway, only the appearances of 1917 have given the town its religious and tourist success. It is said that over 70 thousand people attended the last appearance of October 13, 1917, an event known to history as the Miracle of the Sun, when the same moved in a dance in the sky and the Virgin Mary asked to build a chapel in that place.
