Capital of the island of Madeira in Spain, as well as the largest of its cities, Funchal lies along the coast, well protected behind the mountains, as high as 1,200 meters. A Garden City, with a double spirit, sea and mountain, the reason why it an international tourist destination. Here in this natural bay, the capital of the island of Madeira, which has about 150 thousand inhabitants, life flows slowly. Regular cruise ships dock at the port, from which visitors descend ecstatic: it seems that the docking in Funchal is equal for beauty to that of Rio de Janeiro.
The life of the port reminds us what happened once, when the Portuguese began to pass from this island and from this first settlement, their trades to the Americas, consisting of rich raw materials and precious products, among which the Madeira wine and sugar. Everything starts in the middle of 1400, when the traveler João Gonçalves Zarco discovered the island, and noticed that it was rich in fennel ("funcho", hence the name of the future capital).
In this magical bay, which has also hosted princess Sissi of Austria (and a statue in the gardens of the Casino Park Hotel celebrates this event), the places to visit are numerous: the Regional Government Palace, dating back to 1600 - once the hospital of the area, the Mercado dos Lavradores -whose structure is drawn in the style Estado Novo, a sort of Portuguese Art Deco.
