The Castle of Lisbon is located on the highest hill in the centre of the city, in the Alfama district, overlooking the Portuguese capital. The Castle of St. George was built in the fifth century by the Visigoths, and after passing hands between Moors and Christians, it became the royal palace until 1500, when Manuel I moved the residence where now is Praça do Commercio.
The castle has been constantly renovated and changed over time, but the greatest damage occurred with the 1755 earthquake, which completely destroyed its walls. The actual structure of the Castle of São Jorge is the result of the important restoration and maintenance wanted by the government of Salazar, the Portuguese political and conservative economist who died in 1970. The most interesting aspect of the castle is a wall with ten observation towers, as well as the garden with fountains and streams. From the terrace of the pine trees you can admire the most important monuments, including the monument to Cristo Rey and the Tower of Belèm.
