Portimão is a city in the Algarve, ancient region of Portugal – with 45 thousand inhabitants. Completely destroyed by an earthquake in 1755, Portimão has now a fairly modern architecture, result of the rebuilding of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. The city lies at the mouth of river Arade which, at its estuary, gives rise to the beautiful beach of Praia da Rocha, studded with rock formations, overlooked by fine hotels.
Portimão is an industrial city, but tourism is one of its prime sources of income. The historical centre, although a little old from an architectural point of view, is very cozy, with the typical two-storey houses and a maze of streets where shopping is truly a pleasure. Portimão has flourished thanks to its beach of Praia da Rocha, which starting from the middle of the last century has become a very popular destination among British tourists, especially intellectuals. The earthquake in Portimão has spared only the entrance of the Gothic Igreja Matrix and hidden parts of the walls between the houses.
Nearby there is also the beach of Alvor, a long sandy strip with hotels of prestige and sports facilities of all kinds. It is also worth visiting the area of the lagoon, the Ria de Alvor, ideal for bird watching due to the many species of resident and migratory birds that pass through it.
