Porto Santo is an island no more than ten kilometers long and six wide, which is several hundred miles off the coast of Morocco to the north-east of the island of Madeira. The main feature of Porto Santo is its configuration. In the south, the island has a long beach of fine white sand, diving into a crystal-clear sea. In the northern area, the sea is always stormy, and the coast is rugged with steep cliffs. Both sides of the island still have their own charm.
The main town of the island is Vila Baleira in the south-east, where Christopher Columbus lived for a period of his life. The attractions of the town are a church dedicated to Our Lady of Mercy, the city hall and of course the home of Christopher Columbus.
The long beach of Porto Santo is dotted with several hotels offering all the comforts for an unforgettable vacation. One of the main beaches of Porto Santo is Calheta that stands in front of a cliff called Ilheu from Cal, lime island, while in the area of the cliffs, the most touristic area is Fonte da Areia, near the village of Camacha.
The temperature in summer is never over 25 degrees and also in winter the climate is mild, however. On the island there is an international airport that connects the island to the nearby Madeira and Portugal. The island's main celebration is in September: during the Columbus Festival there are demonstrations, parades and plays.
