Oporto, Portugal's second largest city, is a city of red roofs and bridges linking the banks of River Douro. This is a quiet town, medieval-looking, and easy to navigate for tourists. Oporto, or Porto, is reachable by the International Airport Dr. Francisco Sá Carneiro, located about ten kilometers north-west from the city centre. The city is well served by public transport, with bus and subway lines that connect all major tourist attractions.
The city is divided in two by River Douro: the old town is located on the north shore, where there are also the main station, the shopping streets and major monuments. Another area where there are cheap hotels in Porto is the Baixa, crossed by one of the main avenues of the city, Avenida dos Aliados. Many hotels rise near the Praça da Liberdade, in Rua das Flores (also famous for its jewelries) and Rua de São Filipe Néry. Another point of interest is certainly the Parque de Serralves, a city park with woods and gardens.
Porto's nightlife is among the liveliest of Portugal. The clubs, bars and restaurants are located along the streets bordering the river, on the left with the Gaia area, and on the right, in the Ribeira district.
