Tavira, a small town in the district of Faro in the Algarve region of Portugal, is a fishing port and seaside resort with beautiful beaches. One of most popular attractions of Tavira is the Roman bridge with seven arches over the river Gilão in the city centre. This is a beautiful structure of 2000 years ago that has withstood the terrible earthquake of 1755 that largely destroyed the city. Other places of interest are the Igreja da Misericordia a Renaissance church, the civic museum, the Castelo dos Kouros and the Igreja de Santa Maria do castelo, which, however, was been rebuilt as the original after the earthquake.
Tavira is located in the so-called 'Leeward Coast' about twenty miles east of Faro, a major tourist destination in the Algarve region. Tavira is a tourist destination due to the presence of beautiful beaches along the coast around the city, but also for its natural beauties, such as Ilha de Tavira, Tavira Island. This is a sandy island near the coast in the Parque Natural da Ria Formosa: the journey by ferry from the island to the citadel lasts no longer than five minutes. Another resort is the Praia do Barril, a large beach near the apartment complex of Pedras d'el Rei.
