The largest city in the Basque Country, Bilbao, in recent years has seen a major urban renewal: the new urban transport system and the moving of the port towards the mouth of river Nervión, which has allowed the clearing out of many areas in the city, have contributed to increase the tourism offer.
Tourism is nowadays a new economy for the city, which has been focusing for years on the extraction of metals and steel industry, also thanks to the presence of river Nervión, in part navigable, used for trade. Over the last decades, the crisis of modern industry has fairly impoverished urban bourgeoisie, but on the other hand it has led to a diversification of activities and then a development of tourism.
Some industrial areas along the river have been converted into business areas of offices, also thanks to the projects by famous architects such as Norman Foster, who designed the subway, Santiago Calatrava and Frank Gehry, designer of the Guggenheim Museum. The Museum has had a great impact on the development of tourism and thus the need of new hotels.
The best hotels of Bilbao are near the Euskalduna palace, a brand-new convention center on the dockside of the Merced - and near the gardens of Albia.

The Casco Viejo is the historical centre of Bilbao.
