Gijón, in the Asturias region in northwest Spain, overlooks the Bay of Biscay. This important industrial center for the steel industry, is located on the textile trade route joining Santander to Ferrol and A Coruña. The port of Gijón has always been an important hub for trade, especially with the West Indies.
The hinterland of Gijón is characterized by the presence of crops and livestock while the coast is entirely devoted to tourism. The beaches of Gijón are strongly influenced by the tides: at low tide they are very large, while at high tide they disappear and give way to high cliffs.
The historical centre of Gijón is the Cimadevilla old fishermen's quarter. The most important monuments and attractions include the Elogio del Horizonte, the city's symbol, a sculpture placed in front of the sea on the Cerro de Santa Catalina, an old military fortress located on a hill. Worth a visit also Plaza Mayor - which overlooks the town hall, the old Pescadería - now a public building, the Museum of Gijóncon - with collections of regional works, and the house of Gaspar Melchor de Jovellanos - Spanish Enlightenment politician.
