The name Alhambra means 'red fort', by the bricks used for construction. The Alhambra is divided into two zones, a military one, where is the royal guard, and Medina, with the palace Nazaries, the stately homes and the commercial town. The Alhambra began to be built by the Arabs around the middle of 1200, but assumed its current Granada style in the second half of 1300.
Initially it was an autonomous military fortress, with schools, mosques, shops; but when in 1500 the city was conquered by the Catholic king, it became a palace, now converted into gardens and fountains. Also the interiors of the palaces were decorated and tidied up.
