Situated between the river Treto and the bay of Santoña, Laredo is one of the main tourist resorts on the Cantabrian coast. Laredo has one of the largest and most beautiful beaches in the region: La Salvé, a vast expanse of sand three miles long.
The city is divided into three very different areas: the old village and its surroundings, the area of new suburbs and the area of El Puntal.
The old town, declared a Historic-Artistic Site in 1970, still has the remains of medieval walls. It consists of a network of streets, overlooked by large mansions dating to the period from the sixteenth to the eighteenth century. In the highest part rises instead the parish church of Santa Marìa de la Asunción, in Gothic style, which houses a magnificent Flemish altarpiece.
The second area extends up to Plaza de Carlos V, it is now the shopping and administrative center. Between Plaza de Carlos V and El Puntal, there are three main avenues that run parallel to each other, flanked by the two beaches of the city.
Laredo is also known for the famous Battle of Flowers, which is held every year on the last Friday of August and offers a great spectacle of lights and colors. The streets are full of fresh flowers used to decorate parade floats, stalls and musical performances that enliven the city until late at night when a fireworks display concludes the festival.
