Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, or more simply Las Palmas, is a large city of almost 380 000 inhabitants in the archipelago north of the Spanish Canary island of the same name. The island of Gran Canaria is located directly opposite the city of Laayoune in Morocco. The history of the island is mainly linked to the trade routes to America: in the centuries after its discovery in late 1400, it bacame a land of immigration from Spanish, Portuguese and Italians.

Among the main tourist attractions, it is worth mentioning the Catedral de Santa Ana, in the city centre, in the district of Vegueta; the house/museum of Christopher Columbus, also known as house museum de Colón, always in the Vegueta district, which hosted the Genoese navigator in the his first trip 'to India'. The neighborhood Vegueta, however, is all to be visited, with its colonial architecture of the XV and XVI century, Plaza del Espiritu Santo behind the town hall with the Canario Museum including a collection of finds from the island and the Centro Atlántico de Arte Moderno, with a collection of contemporary art.

The city of Las Palmas has had an impressive development in recent years and is now the most important city of the archipelago. The commercial port and tourist center Puerto de La Luz is undergoing further expansion to accommodate its entire flow of merchant ships and cruise liners.
