The heart of the city is the Plaza de Puerta del Sol, a square that looks like a half moon with the eighteenth-century Casa de Correos (Post Office Building) with the famous clock that marks the official strokes for the New Year. From the Puerta del Sol, taking the Calle Mayor, you can reach the Plaza Mayor, a square completely surrounded by arcades where the market and initiatives and events take place every Sunday.
The entrance to the square is made of nine ports: the most famous among those is the one with the Arc de Cuchilleros. In the square there are really many bars and restaurants. In Plaza de la Villa there is the town hall and, nearby, the Almudena Cathedral and the Royal Palace, residence of the reals: behind the building there are several gardens including those of Lepanto and Sabatino, with the famous hedge labyrinth and the fountains with water games. The next stop is the Plaza de España with its monument to Cervantes. Another point of interest in downtown is certainly the Calle Gran Via, the shopping and strolling boulevard. Anywhere in the centre of Madrid, you can stay in middle and upper class hotels, as well as eating and drinking, in the countless clubs, bars and restaurants that make the Spanish capital such a centre of international entertainment.
