Pamplona, famous tourist destination in Europe, is a Spanish city in the autonomous community of Navarre. This is a city full of charm and history, with many parks, monuments of great historical value and a very busy social life. Pamplona, in the foothills of the Pyrenees, has managed to blend harmoniously the ancient and modern, opening the contemporary world without losing the charm of tradition.
Until the early twentieth century, Pamplona was entirely enclosed within its walls, but the need to expand - also due to industrialization and immigration, has led to the development of several modern areas. This does not upset the soul of the city: large green areas are a buffer between the historic districts and the new ones.
The typical picture of Pamplona is the bull run through the narrow streets during the festival of San Fermin. But this is rather simplistic, because the city is also an excellent example of medieval and Renaissance architecture, and rich in places of great historical and cultural value, such as the walls, the church of San Saturnino and San Nicolás, the Gothic cathedral, the Cámara de Comptos of the fourteenth century or the Town Hall Ayuntamiento and the Palacio Provincial.

Very charming are the walks along river Arga, where the contrast between the old and the new city reaches the highest expression, with the new boulevards overlooked by historical buildings, rather than the heart of the old city, ancient suburbs that nowadays are part of the city, such as San Cernin, San Nicolás and Navarrería.
Other places to visit are:, the Church of San Lorenzo in Calle Mayor; the convent in Plaza de Recoletas, the Museum of Navarre in Cuesta Santo Domingo, but also the Old Market, St. John’s Seminary and the Diocesan Museum. From the Palace of Navarre branches out Gran Avenida Carlos III, while from Calle San Miguel you get to Plaza San Francisco, with the aforementioned Cámara de Comptos.
Among the major parks in Pamplona, the most famous are the Taconera Gardens, with paths and rows of trees, home to deer, peacocks and swans. The Antoniutti park reaches the foot of the Citadel, the oldest area of the city. Other city parks are La Ciudadela, Yamaguchi, La Media Luna: the latest green area is the large el Lago, in the new Mendillorri district.
The historical centre of the city is a succession of small pedestrian streets with shops, bars and restaurants, traditional meeting places on summer evenings. And it is close to the town hall where, on July 6, a crowd of white and red dressed people gather to attend one of the most famous festivals in the world: the festival of Sanfermines.
The festival lasts from July 6 to 14, and is held in honor of the patron saint, San Fermin. The event begins with the launch of the chupinazo, a rocket, from the balcony of the City Hall. The most famous moments are the bull runs on July 7 and 14: the bulls are left free to run into the crowd, until they reach the bullfight.
