
Salamanca, a city in the Spanish province of Castile and Leon, is an important university center. The city of Salamanca, over 150 thousand inhabitants, lies on the border between the Extremadura and Portugal. The area next to the Sierra is very green, with forests and many varieties of plants, especially oaks. The city thrives on tourism and industry, especially related to the large turnout of young people from across Europe who frequent its university during the summer.
Salamanca has always been a place of culture, with one of the oldest universities in Europe and most prestigious in Spain. More than 45 000 students attend the various courses of the Universidad de Salamanca, a complex of buildings in the square including the Patio de Escuelas, including the old university, las escuelas mayores, the Hospital of the Study and the University Museum.
Other attractions in the city are the two cathedrals, the Vieja, in the Romanesque style and dating back to the twelfth century, and the new one, in Gothic-Renaissance style and built in the sixteenth century; Plaza Mayor - the lounge of Salamanca, the Clerecía, Baroque home of the University Pontifical; the convent of St. Stephen; Monterrey palace, with its magnificent towers, the Casa de las Conchas, the house of shells, with a front decorated with scallop shells home to a public library.

The artistic and cultural past of this city is documented by the presence of dozens of print shops and libraries, monasteries, convents, and a multitude of churches. But Salamanca is famous also for its gastronomy, based on casseroles of pork and lamb, or cold dishes such as the limòn of Ciudad Rodrigo, based on meat, the hornazo – an Easter bun; the Arabic and Hebrew character specialties, such as the amarguillos sweets, the mazapanesi, the bollos and the galletas, the roscas and the quisquillas almendradas. In the bars and restaurants of the centre you can taste the best dishes, but the tradition of tapeo, i.e. tasting, is one of the most famous in the clubs of Plaza Mayor, Calle Clavel and Plaza San Julián.
Salamanca is also famous for trade, goldsmiths, leather workers, manufacturers of fabrics and laces, cabinet makers and carvers, divided into guilds in different districts of the city. Do not miss the many celebrations throughout the year: in February, Las Calendas and the carnival; in March the Lunes de Aguas, an ancient festival celebrating the return of the prostitutes moved away during Lent; in June, the feast of San Jun de Sahagún, the patron saint of Salamanca; in the summer, the Fiestas de Santiago Apóstol with the bull runs; in September, the fiesta of the Virgin de la Vega and San Mateo.
